Ein Soundclash ist ein musikalisches Kräftemessen zwischen zwei oder mehr Soundsystems.

Grundsätzliches

In einem Soundclash spielen zwei oder mehr Soundsystems abwechselnd, meistens über mehrere Runden hinweg, innerhalb einer festgelegten Zeit ihre von Sängern eigens für den Sound angefertigten Produktionen, den sogenannten Dubplates gegeneinander und messen sich in einem musikalischen Wettstreit, der von den MCs des Sounds dann noch angeheizt wird. Höhepunkt der meisten Clashes ist das Dub fi Dub, in welchem die Sounds abwechselnd Lied für Lied ihre stärksten und oftmals seltensten Dubplates spielen, meist sind dies von Foundation-Sängern auf selbigen Riddims eingesungene Dubs. Eine Eigenart der Soundclashs sind die sogenannten 45-Clashes bei denen vorrangig 45s - also Singles gespielt werden.

Geschichte des Soundclashs

Die Wurzeln des Soundclashs dürften in der Konkurrenz zwischen jamaikanischen Soundsystems in den fünfziger Jahren, noch vor der Entstehung von Ska, Reggae u.ä. liegen. Sounds wie "Sir Coxsone's Downbeat" und "Duke Reid's Trojan" standen in hartem Wettbewerb zueinander, ausgedrückt etwa im Bemühen immer die aktuellsten Rhythm&Blues-Songs aus den USA zu spielen. Dabei konnte es beim Buhlen um die Gunst des Publikums auch zu Ausbrüchen von Gewalt zwischen den Anhängern der jeweiligen Sounds kommen.


Die heute unterschiedenen Formen des Soundclashs und des DJ-Clashs waren früher nicht in dieser Form zu trennen. Vielmehr traten bis zum Ende der achtziger und Anfang der neunziger Jahre bei Clashes einerseits die mit einem Soundsystem assoziierten DJs gegeneinander an, es kamen aber auch schon Dubplates oder normale Singles zum Einsatz, begleitet von entsprechenden Speeches des jeweiligen DJs. Anfang der neunziger Jahre kam es jedoch zu einem Paradigmenwechsel; einzelne DJs standen zunehmend seltner in Diensten eines speziellen Sounds; statt dessen übernahmen die MCs der Sounds die Arbeit am Mikrofon, die sich jetzt ausschließlich auf Speeches beschränkte, während zunehmend Dubplates aufgelegt wurden und Singles schließlich heute als verpönt gelten (Ausnahme: 45-Clash).

Regeln

In den neunzigern etablierten sich zunehmend Soundclashs mit festen Regeln. Das Spektrum reicht dabei von einer reinen Festlegung der Dauer einer Runde bis hin zu vorgeschriebenen Tune-Inhalten, wie etwa Runden mit Ganja-Tunes, Singer-Tunes oder 45s; teilweise werden auch Runden ohne Flüche ("No Bad Word") oder sogenannte "Forced Forwards" vorgesehen. Die meisten Soundclashs enden im sogenannten Dub fi Dub, in dem jeder Sound abwechselnd einen Tune spielt.

Sound Clash

A Sound clash is a musical competition where crew members from opposing reggae sound systems pit their skills against each other.

Sound clashes take place in a variety of venues, both indoors and outdoors. Traditionally, each sound system would use their own equipment. More recently, however, many venues have sound equipment 'built in'.

Primarily featuring reggae (or dancehall) music, the object is to beat or "kill" their competitors. By choosing carefully the tracks played or "selecting" and featuring exclusive, personalised tracks or dub plate specials, a sound system can stimulate a more positive reaction from their audience and so win the clash.

The Rules

Usually the Sound systems in the sound clash will play for a set time - say 30 minutes before switching. This time interval gets shorter and shorter, so when playing returns to one sound again, he or she may only play a shorter time. Finally, near the end of the clash they go song on song or "Dub fi dub" (which obviously requires dual mixing consoles) resulting in an awesome gig.

A popular format is 30-15-Dub fi Dub. (30 Min, 15 min then Dub fi Dub). The winner is usually determined by crowd response.

Introduction :

The much anticipated and long awaited Reggae Summer 2002 was about to
erupt. Nuff rumours got spread that Pow Pow would kill Jaro in Germany
and most people thought that Germany's finest would send Jaro home.
People from all over Europe turned out to the Altes Zollamt in
Stuttgart to witness the biggest clash mainland Europe ever had. More
than 1.000 patrons were flocking in from early. The annual event was
promoted nationwide by Sentinel and Blessed Love that's why the clash
was the talk of the entire country for weeks. Minutes after midnight,
Pionear out of the Germaican camp entered the stage to announce the
beginning of the clash. After a brief introduction of both sounds
followed by the coin toss it was just seconds to go. Pow Pow played
first, Jaro second. And that's what happened:
